EDINBURG – On Saturday, May 14th, 2022, I attended my commencement ceremony to celebrate my upcoming Master of Education in Educational Technology degree from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at the Bert Ogden Arena.

It was great to have friends, colleagues, and mentors. Some in attendance were staff from Child Protective Services, Judge Carlos Villalon, Jr. (Associate Judge, Child Protection Court of the RGV -West), my elementary school counselor, my middle/high school principal who has been there for me since we met many years ago and my last foster mom.

After commencement, we went to eat to one of my favorite restaurants, Koko’s in McAllen. We were able to share wonderful memories from when I was an elementary school student and my time in foster care.

Afterwards, I got home and opened the cards, gift cards and other items I was gifted. I love and appreciate all of them!

The one gift that really stood out and had me crying tears of joy was that gift from my elementary school counselor Ms. Heartfield. She gifted me two drawings my dad made for her in handkerchiefs back in 2003 (yes, 19 years ago!) while he was in jail. They are still in perfect condition as if they were drawn yesterday. Both of my parents are deceased, but this is the only physical item that has my dad’s hands all over them.

Thank you, Ms. Heartfield, for the wonderful gift! Life does have a way playing itself.

My official degree certification date is set to be in October pending the completion of capstone.
